MMA News and Notes – August 12-18

In this edition we cover all the MMA news from the past week and discuss some upcoming fights, recent fighter signings, and rumoured fights. Covering the UFC, Strikeforce, and Bellator as well as Tachi Palace Fights, Shark Fights and the Maximum Fighting Championship, continue reading for all the week’s news from the wonderful world of Mixed Martial Arts.


  • With all the news surrounding Strikeforce losing fighters we talk about the Strikeforce Challengers 18 which took place this weekend.
    • Joe Duarte pulled off a Unanimous Decision victory over Jorge Gurgel.
    • Danillo Villeforte made his Strikeforce debut and dropped a contentious decision at the hands of Nate James.
    • Pat Healy’s wrestling carried him to a Unanimous Decision over Eric Wisely.
    • Ronda Rousey cemented her spot as the premiere prospect at 145lbs in Women’s MMA, stopping Sarah D’Alelio in a mere 25 seconds (not without some controversy surrounding referee Steve Mazagatti’s stoppage however)
  • The Strikeorce Challengers 19 main event was just confirmed. Unbeaten Light Heavyweight Lorenz Larkin will be taking on Virgil Zwicker. Ryan Couture also will be back in action, attempting to rebound from his first professional loss.


  • Newly signed fighter Rad Martinez will be making his debut September 17th.
  • Bellator 48 features the ‘Summer Series’ Featherweight final with Pat Curran facing Marlon Sandro for the opportunity to fight the winner of the Joe Warren/Patricio Freire rematch for the featherweight title.
  • Bellator’s Season 5 tournaments will consist of 8-man brackets in the Middleweight, Welterweight and Bantamweight divisions.

  • Rashad Evans fresh off his victory over Tito Ortiz is now in line for a shot at the Rampage vs. Jones winner.
  • UFC Live 5 is this Sunday on Versus.
    • Chris Lytle faces Dan Hardy in what will be Lytle’s retirement fight, and is must win bout for Hardy as he has lost 3 fights in a row.
    • Potential Lightweight title eliminator between Ben Henderson and Jim Miller is the co-main event of the evening.
    • The (other) early favorite for Fight of the Night is Charles Oliveira facing Donald Cerrone.
    • Rounding out the main card is Amir Saddolah going up against Duane Ludwig.
  • UFC Fight Night 25 takes place September 17th, with Jake Shields facing Jake Ellenberger in the main event, in what is a huge opportunity for Ellenberger to enter the upper echelon at 170lbs.
  • Reports have been running rampant that Alistair Overeem – recently released from his Strikeforce contract – would be open to signing a deal with the UFC. He also said it would be an exclusive contract where he would just fight for the UFC.

Other MMA News

  • Ryan Jimmo is set to defend his MFC light heavyweight title against Sokoudjou at MFC 31, October 7th.
  • Ian McCall defeated Darrel Montague for th3e Tachi Palace Fights Flyweight Title.
  • Also on TPF 10, Eddie Yagin submitted former Bellator Featherweight Champion Joe Soto, and Jussier da Silva may have claimed the next title shot, with a win over Mamoru Yamaguchi.
  • Dream 17 will now feature Gerald Harris facing Kazuhiro Nakamura, in addition to the first round of Bantamweight Grand Prix, and a litany of Featherweight and Lightweight action.
  • Pro Elite, despite not even being one event deep into their new organization, has announced that they will run a Heavyweight Grand Prix in 2012 focusing much more on up-and-coming talents.
